First days in Rapa Nui

After another round of films, we arrived in Rapa Nui (Easter Island), late in the night, to be welcomed by Egón who drove us the 800 meters to our appartement.
Nach einer weiteren Kinosession kommen wir nachts in Rapa Nui (Osterinsel) an und werden von Egón begrüßtund die 800m zu unserem Apartment gebracht.

We slept well in our new surroundings to wake up to a tropical downpour. A late breakfast at the harbour restaurant and the rain stopped so that we could venture out into Hanga Roa, the capital and only village of Rapa Nui.
Wir schlafen gut in unseren neuen Umgebung, werden aber von einem tropischen Mega-Regen geweckt. Ein spätes Frühstück im Hafen, dann hört endlich der Regen auf und wir können im Trockenen Hanga Roa, die Haupt- und einzige Stadt, erkunden.

I started explaining where what is, (I have been here before with Lisa,) but that was "too much information", (TMI, thanks Dan!)as Angie has also been here .
Ich erkläre, wo was ist (Ich war schon einmal mit Lisa hier), aber das war 'too much info' (TMI! TMI!), da Angie j auch schon mal hier war.

We walked the streets and heard music. So we followed the sound to the sportshall where half the population were practicing for the Tapati Festival.  We had arranged our entire travel plans to be here at this time. It is a contest between two clans competing in a series of dancing , music, arts and crafts, cultural and sporting events.
Wir bummeln durch die Straßen und hören Musik. Das führt uns zur Turnhalle wo die Hälfte der Bevölkerung für das Tapati Festival trainiert. Unsere ganze Reise hatten wir ja um dieses Festival geplant. Es ist ein Wettbewerb zwischen zwei Clans, die sich im Tanz, Musik, Kunst und Kunsthandwerk, kulturellen und sportlichen Wettkämpfen messen.
 
We watched the 12-18 year olds followed by the adults and estimated that there were about 600 people taking part.  The whole population is ca. 4000. There were some very pregnant ladies amongst them and they were swinging their hips with the best of them. The men were very energetic in their dancing and were very warlike in their actions. 
Wir beobachten die 12-18-jährigen, dann die über 18-jährigen, insgesamt ca. 600 Leute bei einer Gesamtbevölkerung von ca. 4000. Etliche sehr schwangere Frauen sind dabei und sie schwingen ihre Hüften genauso rasant wie die anderen. Die Männer tanzen sehr kraftvoll und mit Haka-ähnlichen Bewegungen.

We had to leave before the end as we needed to buy some food. The supermarket was just up the road (perfect: only 1 choice of cheese, bread, muesli etc.so no decision making required)and after packing stuff into the rucksack, I thought we could take a shortcut back to the appartment. I remembered it Wrong! We were going the wrong way but then we came across the other half of the population in the college sportshall practicing their dance. We watched them for a while but suddenly it was dark and we decided to go back the way we came and were very glad to get back to the apartment.
Wir können nicht bis zum Ende bleiben, da wir noch einkaufen müssen. Der Supermarkt ist nur die Straße hoch (perfekt: je nur 1 Sorte Käse/Brot/Müsli etc, das erfordert keine Entscheidungsfreude) und wir packen alles in den Rucksack. Terry kennt angeblich eine Abkürzung, wir finden aber nicht zurück zum Apartment, sondern die andere Hälfte der Bevölkerung in der Turnhalle der Schule, die hier trainiert. Wir gucken ihnen eine Weile zu, aber es wird schnell dunkel und wir gehen die Strecke zurück, die wir kennen.

The next day our plans had to be revised as we slept long. It had rained incessantly in the night hammering on our tin roof and the island had its worst thunderstorm in 40 yrs.  The 5 o´clock visit to the fishermen in the harbour was postponed. We walked down to the quay passing an artists gallery and took fotos of the Ahu Riata and looked for somewhere to have coffee.
Am nächsten Tag müssen wir wieder unsere Pläne ändern, da wir lange schlafen. Die ganze Nacht regnete und hämmerte es ununterbrochen auf das Metalldach und die Insel erlebt den schwersten Sturm und das schwerste Unwetter seit 40 Jahren. Unser Spaziergang zum Fischerhafen in der Morgendämmerung wird verschoben. Stattdessen laufen wir zur Meeresbucht vorbei an einer Kunstgalerie. Wir fotografieren Ahu Riata und suchen einen Platz zum Kaffeetrinken. 

Coffee turned into lunch at a beautiful restaurant overlooking the small harbour where two local boys were swimming. Being in the harbour, the menu was "fishy" and I ended up eating Ceviche, a raw fish delicacy.  I am not normally a fish person  (Angela: Only Fish 'n Chips from England) , but it was nice, but different.
Aus dem Kaffee wird Lunch in einem tollen Restaurant am Hafen, wo Jungs im Hafenbecken schwimmen. Da wir nun mal im Hafen sind, ist die Speisekarte 'fischig' und ich esse 'Ceviche', eine lokale Spezialität. Ich bin normalerweise keine 'fish person' (Angela: Nur Fish 'n Chips aus England), aber es war lecker, nur anders.

The sea was quite rough and was bursting over the sea wall as we walked along the coast into town and visited the information center to find out when things were happening.
Das Meer war aufgewühlt und krachte über die Hafenbefestigung als wir entlang der Küste zur Stadt laufen. Dort gehen wir zum Informationzentrum, um herauszufinden, was so los ist.

We then walked to where the large stage was being erected for the festival. After, we  watched some small children swimming in a rock pool nearby, that was being constantly refilled by the waves.  Then Angela, being the professional schoolteacher that she is, wanted to see how the 6-12 year olds (ca. 100 children) were being trained so off to the sportshall. With my untrained eye, I only saw chaos, but Angela was impressed. Next came the intermediate group and that went a little smoother. We then went to the other group of the 2nd clan at the college to compare dances. They were both very good. It will look even more spectacular when they have their costumes on and are on the decorated stage.
Dann gucken wir zu, wie die große Bühne für das Festival aufgebaut wird. Direkt daneben ist ein Kinderschwimmbecken, direkt aus den Felsen gehauen und mit Felsbrocken gesichert. Angela, stets die Lehrerin, wollte nun sehen wie die 6-12 Jährigen (ca. 100 Kinder) in der Turnhalle für das Festival trainieren. Ich sah nur Chaos, aber sie ist beeindruckt auch verglichen mit der anderen Kindergruppe des 2. Clans. Es wird alles noch spaktakulärer aussehen, wenn sie ihre Kostüme anhaben und auf der dekorierten Bühne tanzen.

All of a sudden, it was dark again and we made our way back. Near to our appartment, I talked Angela into having a Pisco Sour as a nightcap. It was so good that we had to have a second one. The plan to visit the fishermen on the quay at 5 o´clock had to be postponed.....  Angela took pity on me and read her book while I slept,(snored), on peacefully. We will see the fishermen unloading their catch another day. I am writing this during our siesta time just after breakfast. Angie has claimed the bed!
Plötzlich ist es wieder dunkel und wir gehen zurück. Wir kommen an einer Bar vorbei und ich bequatsche Angela, eine Nachttrunk in Form eines Pisco Sour zu trinken. Der war so gut, dass wir noch einen zweiten trinken müssen. Also wird der Plan, den Fischern um 5 Uhr morgens zuzusehen, wieder verschoben. Angela hat Erbarmen mit mir und liest ihr Buch, während ich friedlich schlafe (schnarche). Wir werden die Fischer schon irgendwann sehen. Ich schreibe dies in unsere Siesta, die direkt auf unser Frühstück folgt. Angela hat das Bett belegt!

After the siesta we organise a rental car and go to the 'government house for a programme of the festival. We get a programme and 10 posters which we freely hand out to other tourists. Then we watch the practising of the dancing again, the local youngsters playing football with a  Moai watching  and the sunset. To save money, we decided against a pisco sour sundowner and to enjoy a bowl of spagbol (spaghetti / tomato sauce)together. Angie boiled water and put the spaghetti into the pot. What´s that! she cried.......it´s moving. The pasta was infested with little black beetles which certainly finished that item on the menu. As a substitute, fresh fruit with muesli and joghurt saved the day. We just have to go shopping for breakfast in the morning.
