Good as gold- (NZ saying- meaning: s.th.has been done very well/ s.th. is very good)

Hiya all, hope you caught up with our earlier posts, it took us some time to upload it all. After finishing with the internet, we took the bus into Dunedin. Gavin, the bus driver was very helpful and friendly (like most Kiwis) in telling us of what to see in the city.

Hi ihr alle, das Hochladen der letzten Posts hat ganz schön lange gedauert. Danach sind wir mit dem Bus nach Dunedin. Gavin, der Busfahrer, war wie die allermeisten NSLänder sehr hilfsbereit und freundlich und hatte gute Tipps für seine Stadt.


 which was crowded as there were two large P&O cruise ships with 6000 tourists in the harbour. Angie did some retail therapy and I took the chance to fotograph the beautiful old train station-the most fotografed building in NZ.

die aber so überfüllt war, da 6000 Touristen von 2 Kreuzschiffen im Hafen andockten. Ich hab ein bisschen 'shopping therapy' gemacht nach den ganzen Naturbesichtigungen und Wanderungen. Terry hat das am meisten fotografierte Gebäude NSLs fotografiert- den ca. 120 Jahre alten Bahnhof. 

On returning to the campsite, we went to bed early-ish.  Making good use of the strong signal (vodafon please take note, not always available), to upload and skype, we got up at 05:30 in the morning to catch you people on the other side of the planet in your evening. This has its advantages as well as its disadvantanges. It was certainly nice to talk to you. We were planning on driving south to the Catlins, but on reading the local weather report, storms with high winds and possible structural damage, we turned right and headed inland. After driving a while, I started to become a little tired (note-disadvantage of early rising) and Angie saw a small info in the map referring to "lonely graves" so we decided to go and give them some company. Turn right over a blue bridge (across NZ biggest river Clutha  with the fastest flow) into the village of Millers Flat.

Zurück auf dem Campingplatz gingen wir früh ins Bett, um morgens um 5.30 den tollen Empfang zu nutzen, Fotos hochzuladen und mit einigen von euch auf der anderen Seite des Planeten zu skypen. Das hat Vor- wie Nachteile.Schön mit euch zu skypen.Wir wollten südlich in die Catlins, aber nach Hören des Wetterberichts waren dort schwere Stürme angekündigt. Also bogen wir rechts ab und fuhren ins Landesinnere. Nach einer Weile wurde mein Rentner-Gatte müde (bitte zur Kenntnis nehmen: Nachteil frühes Aufstehen), also schlug ich vor, zu den in der Karte verzeichneten 'Lonely graves- einsamen Gräbern' zu fahren und ihnen Gesellschaft zu leisten. Also rechts ab über die blaue Brücke (über den größten Fluss NSL Clutha mit der schnellsten Fließgeschwindigkeit)zum Dorf Millers Flat.

Along a metal (unpaved -for those non kiwis) road for about 8kms. And there they were: 2 graves side by side in an enclosed allotment by themselves and nothing but rolling hills to see, sweet scented air to breathe and the rushing of the  river to hear faintly in the back . It told of a lovely story . A dead body was found at the side of the river in 1861 and was buried. A man named William Riley  not knowing the name of the dead man put a wooden grave 'stone' up saying: 'Somebody's darling buried here.'

8 km auf einem Schotterweg(heißt hier 'metal road', da die Schottersteinchen metallhaltig sind)und da waren sie: 2 Gräber nebeneinander mit kleiner Abtrennung rundherum und nichts als Hügeln, duftender Luft und dem Flussrauschenim Hintergrund.Eine schöne Geschichte steckt dahinter: Die Leiche eines Ertrunkenen wurde 1961 gefunden, hier begraben und dann von einem Mann namens Riley mit einem hölzernen Grabstein versehen. Da William Riley den Namen des Toten nicht wusste, gravierte er: ''Somebody's darling buried here------Jemandes Liebling liegt hier.'

When Riley died half a century later, he was laid to rest next to s.b.'s darling and both head new grave stones.

Als Riley ein halbes Jahrhundert später starb, wurde er neben 'jemandes Liebling' begraben und beide bekamen neue Grabsteine.

It was a nice shady place so we had a nap. Refreshed, Angie found that there was a nice walk to a footbridge that crossed the wide Clutha river and so off we went. After wondering where the track started, we were overtaken by a "grader" who happened to be `grading´.

Auf dem kleinen Parkplatz war es schön schattig, also machten wir ein Nickerchen. Weder schlug ich einen Weg zu einer Fußbrücke über den breiten Clutha-Fluss vor. Da wir aber nicht wussten, wie genau wir dahin gelangen konnten, fragten wir einen Planierer auf seinem Planierfahrzeug, der uns just in diesem Moment überholte und beim Planieren war.

Time to have a chat: He told us of a slight disagreement between the owner of the land and the council and that the path had been closed, but to do the walk anyway as it would be worth it. So we did, and it was.



Zeit für ein Schwätzchen: Er erzählte uns von einem Krach zwischen der Gemeinde und dem Farmer, dem das Land um die Brücke herum gehört. Also musste der Fußweg geschlossen werden, aber wir sollten bloß den Weg zur alten Brücke nehmen, es würde sich lohnen. Gesagt, getan.

Before the bridge was built in 1912 school chidren had to cross the river via a sling bridge- during high water the attendance of school went down! The school has recently made patchwork to tell this hi/story.

Bevor 1912 die Schule gebaut wurde mussten die Schulkinder den Fluss per 'Schlaufenbrücke'-bei Hochwasser ging der Schulbesuch zurück! Die jetzige Schule hat vor kurzem Patchwork-Stickereien zur lokalen Geschichte angefertigt u.a. von dieser geschichtlichen Geschichte.

The farmer displays an old gun at the entrance to his farm and he told the local council that his sons wanted to ride around on motorbikes across his grassy and rocky land and shoot rabbits- so he didn't want tourists being mistaken for rabbits by his sons.

Der Farmer hat eine altes Gewehr bei der Auffahrt zur Farm und er hatte der Gemeinde gesagt, seine Söhne führen mit ihren Mopeds auf seinem Gelände herum um Kaninchen zu schießen- er wolle keine Touris auf seinem Land, die seine Söhne für  Kaninchen halten könnten.




After that, as it was getting late, we decided to stay at the holiday park in Millers Flat. The next day was national election day here in New Zealand. It was a very short campaign- it only started after the rugby world cup. I mean, you have to get your priorities right!!! We have followed some of the political discussions- one of the topics: No selling of NZ assets to foreigners. China is buying land to plant trees- they grow 3x faster than anywhere else.

Es wurde spät, also blieben wir die Nacht über in Millers Flat. Am nächsten Tag war National-Parlaments- Wahltag in NSL. Es war ein kurzer Wahlkampf- der erst nach der Rugby WM begann. Ich mein, man muss ja seine Prioritäten setzen!!! Wir hatten einige der Wahlkampfthemen verfolgt- eins der Themen: Kein Verkauf von Grundstücken an Ausländer/ausländische Firmen- China kauft Gebiete auf,pflanzt Bäume an, die hier 3x so schnell wachsen als woanders.

The school library was being used as the voting booth. It was like a big magnet to Angie, School and voting and library, heaven! While Angie looked through the classroom windows and hopscotched on the school yard.

Die Schulbücherei wurde als Wahllokal benutzt- ich wurde magnetisch angezogen: Schule!Wahlen!Bücherei! Himmlisch! Ich guckte durch die Fenster in die Klassenräume und nutzte den Schulhof.

 I wandered off to the library where there were two very  friendly ladies officiating the voting. I had a flashback to entering Loverich Grundschule to vote in the local elections. The people coming to vote were all known to the ladies and it all went very smoothly.

Terry ging schon mal in die Bücherei vor- da saßen zwei sehr freundliche Frauen- die Wahlleiterinnen. Das hab ich auch schon gemacht in unserem Wahllokal in Loverich.Alle ca. 200 Wähler waren den Damen bekannt und alles lief glatt.





 

The voters looked at us a little nervously as we were the intruders here. No, no, we are not inspectors from the election commitee, just some nosy tourists asking questions. The voters were offered an official sticker: 'I voted today.' and an inofficial sweet after posting their slips. 

Die Wahlberechtigten guckten uns neugierig/skeptisch an: Nein, nein! Wir sind keine Inspektoren der Wahlbehörde! Nur neugierige Touristen mit vielen Fragen.Die Wähler bekamen nachdem sie gewählt hatten, einen offiziellen Sticker' Ich habe heute gewählt!'und ein inoffizielles Bonbon

Most farmers took off their muddy boots before entering the voting room.

Die meisten Farmer zogen ihre dreckigen Gummmistiefel aus, bevor sie das Wahllokal betraten.

The colour of which was a topic of concern. There were white ones, OK, but also green ones, politically incorrect as the booth should be neutral ground. The explanation that they were the only colours available was accepted by all.  

The ladies told us, that in the last election they were officially asked not to wear anything blue (national party), green-yeah, rot-got that, too!, black-red-white-Maori Party, yellow- Nationalists. 'What choice do you have? We thought we had to come wearing nothing at all!!!' 

The voting ladies enjoyed our company and we had to drink tea with them and were allowed to take a sweet and a sticker.

Über die Farbe der Bonbons wurde öfter diskutiert. Es gab weiße Bonbons-okay. Aber auch grüne- politisch nicht korrekt, das Wahllokal muss unabhängig sein!!! Die Erklärung der Damen, dass es einfach keine Bonbonsin allen Farben der Parteien gibt, wurde dann grinsend akzeptiert.

Die Frauen erzählten uns auch, dass sie bei der letzten Wahl offiziell aufgefordert worden waren,nichts blaues (Konservative),grünes (klar), rotes (auch klar), schwarz-weiß-rotes (Maori Partei), gelbes (Nationalisten) zu tragen.'Wir dachten, was dürfen wir denn tragen?? Am besten ziehen wir gar nichts an!' 

Die Wahldamen bestanden darauf, mit uns Tee zu trinken und wir durften auch einen Sticker und ein Bonbon mitnehmen.

When a couple entered, Pat, one of the ladies, said that Angie was also German and after the voting was done, Marion came over to talk to us. She has been over here now for 21 years and has aquired a lovely kiwi accent. Kyle, her husband, is an author of childrens books and has won prizes for his stories.

Ein Päärchen kam herein und Pat, eine der Damen, sagte, dass ich auch Deutsche sei. Marion kam dann zu uns: Sie lebt seit 21 Jahren hier mit ihrem Mann Kyle, einem Kinderbuchautoren, der schon etliche Preise für seine Bücher gewonnen hat.

They invited us up to their house for a cup of tea when 'you are finished with voting.' So we did, but drank coffee instead of tea. Marion showed us her pottery workshop where she designs and makes teapots and crockery.

Sie luden uns auf eine Tasse Tee zu sich ein, 'wenn ihr mit Wählen fertig seid.' Aus der Tasse Tee wurde Kaffee und Marion zeigte uns ihre Töpfer-Werkstatt, wo sie Entwürfe fertigt und Teekannen und Geschirr entwirft.

She takes part in exhibitions and people collect her tea pots.If you like the creations, we have her address and we only take 10% commission.  Look at her sugar ladies sugar bowl!!! The hangman and the royal tea pot.
Ihre Werke werden ausgestellt und in Galerien verkauft. Wenn ihr sie mögt, wir haben ihre Adresse und nehmen nur 10% Kommission;)Seht ihr die Zuckerdamen-Zuckerschale?! Das Galgenmännchen und die majestätische Teekanne!
@sixpack: so ein toller Nachmittag mit den beiden alternativen Künstlern in ihrem selbst gebauten Holzhaus! Da hab ich euch richtig herbeigesehnt!

On leaving, they advised us to stay on this side of the river as it is a more scenic route. So we did and it was and we came across a sign for gold panning.
Marion sagte uns-bleibt auf dieser Seite des Flusses, die Straße ist viel schöner. Und was sahen wir da: Ein Schild: Goldwäsche!

 It turned out to be an active gold mine where we could pan for gold. Angie was much more proficient at it than me ( she listened carefully how to do it) and retrieved the double that I panned.
Es war eine offene Goldmine, betrieben von einem Original! Ich war viel erfolgreicher als Terry, schließlich hörte ich dem Goldgräber/-wäscher gut zu. Wir wuschen einfach Fluss-Sediment aus und schon hatten wir Mini-Mini-Blättchen Gold.

We saw a Mum taking her children and their horses for a walk and then drove along the river on to Alexandra, over the hydro-dam and through some fantastic scenery, following the great lake formed by the dam. We are thinking of carrying on up Central Otago today, but if we make it, that´s another story.


Wir sahen eine Mutter, die mit ihren Kindern auf ihren Pferden spazieren ging und dann ging es nach Alexandra, über den Staudamm und durch eine Schlucht. Heute wollen wir nach Zentral-Otago im Hinterland, mal sehen, ob wir das schaffen.

A train ride-----------eine Zugfahrt

Early to bed, early to rise... we were on the road by 7:50am which is really early for us. We had a train to catch. The Taieri Gorge Railway.

Früh ins Bett, früh wieder raus, um 7.50 waren wir schon unterwegs!!!! Ein Zug wartete auf uns. Die Taieri-Schlucht-Bahn.

Dunedin to Pukerangi and back. It was built in the late 1800´s to bring the meat and dairy products from the highlands down to the port to be shipped to England. 12 tunnels and quite a few bridges had to be built. Sometimes the terrain was so difficult, it took a day to proceed 50cm.



Von Dunedin nach Pukerangi und zurück. Die Bahn wurde Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts gebaut, um Fleisch und Milchprodukte vom Hoch/-Hinterland zum Hafen zu bringen und nach England zu verschiffen.Das Terrain war so schwer zu erschließen, manchmal kamen die Eisenbahn-Bauer nur 50cm am Tag weiter. 12 Tunnel und etliche Brücken mussten gebaut werden.

The transport of products and live stock went on for many a year until Britain joined the European Economic Community, (EEC, which was the forerunner of the European Union) which certainly was not to the liking of the New Zealand farmers.
 I will let the pictures talk for themselves. 

 Der Transport von Fleisch-und Milchprodukten und Tieren klappte viele Jahre, bis England Mitglied der EWG (Vorläufer der EU) wurde. Danach mussten sich die Farmer neue Märkte erschließen- Asien ist mittlerweile ein Hauptabnehmer.

The yellow bushes are flowering broom.  You find it everywhere and it makes the farmers angry. Where there is broom, there will be no grass. We also see a lot of pine, silver birches, willow trees, elderflowers, wild flowers and hawthorne. Sometimes the bird song sounds like home: Blackbirds and chaffinches singing, sparrows twittering. All of them bought here by the settlers to make NZ look a bit like home.

Was hier so gelb blüht ist Ginster. Überall zu sehen zum Ärger der Schaffarmer. Wo Ginster wächst, wächst kein Gras.
Außerdem sehen wirt immer wieder Kiefern, Birken, Weiden, blühenden Holunder, Lupinen, Köigskerzen, Weißdorn und manchmal hört sich der Vogelgesang an wie bei uns: Amseln und  Buchfinken singen und Spatzen streiten sich lautstark. Alles Mitbringsel der Siedler, damit es hier ein bisschen wie in der Heimat aussieht.


At the moment, we are sitting in the camper trying to decide where to go and what to do next, so when we know, I´ll let you know. 

Zur Zeit sitzen wir im Wohnmobil und versuchen zu entscheiden, wohin es als nächstes geht und was wir unternehmen wollen. Wenn wir selbst Bescheid wissen, sagen wir euch Bescheid.

Yellow eyed penguins and a sad lord of the castle-------------Gelbaugen-Pinguine und ein trauriger Schlossherr

Portobello, no, not the London road, but the small village on the Otago Harbour was our resting place for two nights. We booked a tour to see yellow-eyed penguins, Stewart Island Shags, (cormorants to us English folks) and New Zealand fur seals. The transport to penguin-beach ( a private nature reserve of a sheep farm)was in an all terrain Argos vehicle which made it even more fun. After all the rain over the past few days, the tracks were really muddy.
Zwei Tage haben wir in Portobello auf der Otago Halbinsel Station gemacht.Dort wollten wir die Gelbaugen-Pinguine sehen, die Stewart-Island-Kormorane und Seelöwen und Robben. In solchen Fahrzeugen wurden wir zum Penguin-Beach transportiert - gefahren, einem privaten Naturschutzgebiet einer Schafzüchter-Farmer-Familie an der Spitze der Halbinsel.

After that, we visited the Royal Albatros Centre (Otago having only mainland albatross colony) where we learnt about the dangers that exist out in the deep oceans. (Mainly Man!) They do tours around their colony but the time was not right to see them flying. At this time, they are nest bound and are difficult to see. 

Danach gingen wir zum Albatross-Zentrum (Otago hat die einzige Festland-Kolonie mit Albatrossen) und sahen dort, welche Gefahren die industrialisierte Hochsee-Fischerei für die Vögel bedeutet. Zum Glück gibt es eine Initiative von Fischern für Fischer in allen Pazifik-Anrainer-Ländern der Südhalbkugel, die  einfache, aber effektive Tricks zum Schutz der Albatrosse weitergeben.

So we did the next best thing and went to see a real New Zealand castle.
Our timing was out because the castle was closed. Because we had stopped on the way there to eat an ice cream in MacAndrews Bay where we noticed that the NZ police have a sense of humour. A sign warning of 'speed camera area' on the bay roads. They placed the sign IN the water.

Wenn wir schon keine Albatrosse bewundern können, dann gucken wir uns eben ein echtes neuseeländisches Schloss an, dachten wir. Nur unser Zeitmanagement passte nicht: Das Schloss war geschlossen. Weil wir zwischendurch in der MacAndrews Bucht ein Eis gegessen haben und entdeckt haben, dass die neuseeländische Polizei echten Humor hat. Ein Schild 'Radar Kontrolle-speed camera area' für die Küstenstraße mitten IM Wasser.
 

so we only got to see the gardens and the castle from outside. It was not a happy castle as William Larnach (Scottsman, banker, politician) built it for his  first wife, (french nobility),she was not too impressed with it and he himself committed suicide in Parliament House after finding out that his third wife was having an affair with his favourite son. After several owners and neglect, it has been wonderfully restored by the Barker family (makers of NZ jams) and returned to its former elegance. A French film is being made there at the moment. The gardens have been partitioned into different areas with many endemic plants being used. Beautiful.

Also lustwandelten wir durch den Schlosspark. Das Schloss hat eine interessante Geschichte. William Larnach, ein Schotte,Banker und Politiker, heiratete eine französische Adelige und baute ihr das Schloss, das sie nicht besonders beeindruckte. Er selbst begann Selbstmord, als er herausfand, dass seine dritte Frau mit seinem Lieblingssohn anbandelte. Es verfiel zwischendrin wie wohl die meisten Schlösser und gehört nun der Barker Familie (sowas wie Zentis in Aachen), die es so toll restauriert hat und die verschiedenen Gärten wieder angelegt hat, dass dort gerade ein franz. Film gedreht wird.

Sterne und Seen- ------stars and lakes

Our first view of Lake Tekapo from the road was breathtaking and we just had to stop and take pictures and we didn't stop taking them.

Unser erster Blick auf Lake Tekapo war so toll, dass wir sofort anfingen zu fotografieren... und nicht mehr aufhörten.

We walked down to the lake's edge,sat and admired the view and commemorated our journey.
Am Seeufer setzten wir uns hin und waren nur mit Gucken beschäftigt und Terry schuf dann eine Erinnerungstafel unserer Reise.

We drove on and just before the dam, there is a small church, Church of the Good Shepherd

Am Seeufer bei dem Dorf Tekapo ist eine kleine Kirche 'Zum guten Hirten'

 and close-by, a statue of a collie dog.

und nahe dabei eine Statue eines Collie- Hundes.

This is a tribute to the part played by shepherds and sheepdogs in the development of the Mackenzie Country. John Mackenzie stole a lot of sheep and grazed them here in the plateau near the Southern Alps of NZ- 19th century.. When he and the stolen sheep were found, other people realised that this barren land was ideal for sheep and so a thief really started an industry and we now know where the socks come from..



Beides zu Ehren der Schäfer und der Schäferhunde, die halfen, das Mackenzie-Hinterland zu erschließen.
John Mackenzie klaute sich im 19. Jahrhundert eine Herde Schafe zusammen und weidete sie hier im damals noch nicht erschlossenen Hochland vor der Bergkette der Südalpen- Southern Alps von NSL. Als er und seine Schafsherde gefunden wurde, brachte er andere Schaffarmer auf die Idee, dieses kahle Land für Schafzucht zu nutzen. So startete ein Dieb eine erträgliche Industrie und wir wissen jetzt, wo die Socken herkommen.
 
We were in time to register for some night star gazing near the Mount John observatory.

Wir haben uns für eine Sternenbeobachtung im nahen Observatorium am Mount John angemeldet.

After dinner, we wrapped up really warm and took a ride up to an observation post to be met by an astronomer who pointed out the main stars and planets in the sky. We looked through a telescope at objects that no longer exist. The clouds parted and we saw the Magellan Clusters and close-ups of stars in the Milky Way sparkling like diamonds. We watched Venus and Mars rise and disappear. We saw Jupiters rings, nebulas and of course the Southern cross which a lot of countries in the Southern hemishere have in their flag. The foto is from another traveller. He took it near the lake.

Abends zogen wir alles an warmen Klamotten an, was wir mithaben und fuhren auf den Berg. Eine Astronomin zeigte uns die wichtigsten Sternenbilder und Planeten. Im Teleskop sahen wir Szerne, die längst erloschen sind. Wir sahen die Magellan-Cluster?? und Sterne der Milchstraße, die wie Diamanten glitzerten.Wir sahen Venus und Mars aufgehen und verschwinden und Jupiters Ringe, Mega-Gaswolken, natürlich das Kreuz des Südens, das viele Länder der Südhalbkugel in ihren Fahnen haben.

The next day we walked around the Mt. Johns summit and had a coffee in the AstroCafe with a view in possibly the best location on this planet for coffee- The coffee was good, too.
Am nächsten Tag umwanderten wir den Gipfel von Mount John und tranken Kaffe im AstroCafe- dem wohl allerbesten Platz für ein Cafe auf diesem Planeten. Der Kaffee war genauso gut wie das Panorama.

...and we just had to stop and take more pictures of the beautiful turquoise blue water with Mt. Cook in the distance.
...wir mussten nur anhalten und Fotos des brillianten türkisem Wasser mit Mount Cook im Hintergrund machen.

At the campsite that evening, we met a couple who were from Kerkrade, NL. Only about 10 kms. from where we live. Small world, eh!  And we read in the shadow of Mt. Cook.


Am Campingplatz direkt am See trafen wir Leute aus Kerkrade-10km von Floverich. Und im Schatten des Berges lasen wir die Zeitung.

On Sunday, the weather was so bad after some fantastic weather that we decided against walking at the base of Mt. Cook and drove east to the sea.
Am Sonntag war das Wetter nach einigen fantastischen Tagen so schlecht- also keine Wanderung am Mount Cook sondern Richtung Osten zurück zur Küste.
At  Maraewhenua, a Maori  cultural site, a rockfall had covered the rock paintings from a few hundred years ago.So we couldn't see the paintings. After that we went to a geological museum and stopped at an area of limestone rocks carved by wind and rain into wonderful sculptures resembling large sleeping giant animals.
Bei Maraewhenua, einer Maori Stätte, waren Felsbrocken runtergeflogen. Das Gebiet war abgesperrt also konnten wir die Feldmalereien nicht sehen.Wir besuchten noch ein kleines geologisches Museum. Da erfahren wir, dass Christchurch und Umgebung auf einem Untergrund aus 600m Sand!!!! gebaut ist, alles Fluss-Sedimente der NSL Alpenflüsse, die hier ins Meer fließen.

Auf einer Weide in der Nähe des Museums gibt es Riesenfelsen, aus denen die Erosion Elefanten-Skulpturen geformt hat.

After another rainy night, we drove south and stopped at Moeraki to see the rather large marble-like boulders, in various forms of erosion, sitting in the sand.
Nach einer weiteren Regennacht, fuhren wir südlich die Küste runter und guckten uns die Moeraki Felsen an, die sehen aus wie Knödel im Meer. Es gibt zerfallene und ganze Knödel-Felsen.

The tide was in so that we did not see them all  but  we did not want to hang around for four hours, so we carried on. Dunedin city did not appeal to us at the time. We just walked up the steepest residential street in the world- says  Guinness book. One woman living in the top house walked backwards up the hill.

Die Flut bedeckte einige Felsen, also fuhren wir weiter nach Dunedin. Auf Stadt hatten wir keine Lust, nur die steilste Wohnstraße der Welt (laut Guiness Buch) interessierte uns. Eine Frau, die im obersten Haus wohnt, ist rückwärts die Straße hochgelaufen.

We continued onto the Otago peninsula, but as I may have said before, that´s another story.
