Totally NZ/ Neuseeland

After the total quiet of the bays near Akaroa, we decided to venture back into civilisation by visiting the Agriculture and Pastoral show in Christchuch. This is where the country "comes to town". This was the first time after the big earthquakes and the people were out for a good time. 'You MUST! go, you will have fun!', everybody told us and we did and we had.
There were appr. 60,ooo visitors on the day we were there.


Nach den ruhigen Tagen in den Meeresbuchten bei Akaroa zog es uns in die Zivilisation: zur Landwirtschafts-Show in Christchurch. Motto: County comes to town. Nach den drei schweren Erdbeben war dies das erste große und fröhliche und sehr populäre Mega-Event. Immer wieder haben uns Neuseeländer gesagt:  'You MUST! go, you will have fun!'
 So war es auch. Ca. 60.000 Besucher waren allein am Freitag da.

The showgrounds were filled with baying sheep being herded by sheepdogs to whistles from the shepherd.

Überall blökende Schafe mit Schäferhunden, die auf die Pfeiftöne ihres stolzen Schäfers hin  die Schafe dirigierten.

Pens filled with and to admire the strongest bulls, the milkiest cows and goats, the most beautiful horses, the busiest chicken and wooliest sheep.

Ställe zum Bestaunen der stärksten Bullen, 'milchigsten' Kühen und Ziegen, schönsten Pferden, fleißigsten Hühnern und wolligsten Schafen.

Wood chopping competitions with axes, chainsaws or handsaws.  We watched a "Jack and Jill" race. A rather large two person hand saw being used to decapitate the end of a log.

Holzfäller-Wettbewerbe mit Äxten oder Kettensägen oder Handsägen. 
 Ein Wettbewerb: Jack and Jill- Säge-Double.

Then we watched a sheepshearing competition between Australia and New Zealand teams using hand shears and then with power shears. But first everybody sang the national anthems. Fascinating!

Danach ein Schafscher-Wettbewewerb zwischen Neuseeland und Australien- aber erst nachdem beide Hymnen gesungen wurden!!

The New Zealand team won by a snip.

Neuseeland gewann um Haaresbreite.

Walking around the grounds, we found the sheep maternity ward. As we watched (together with shrieking teens), right in front of us, a lamb was born. Two minutes later its twin was born. They were licked clean by their mother and the first action after standing up was to drink.

Es gab eine öffentliche Schaf-Entbindungs-Station und wir beobachteten (gemeinsam mit kreischenden Teenagern in der Nähe), wie ein Lämmchen geboren wurde und zwei Minuten später sein Geschwisterchen. Die Mutter leckte beide ab, dann versuchten sie ganz wackelig aufzustehen und zu trinken.

On the showground, there was showjumping and races. The highlight for us being the shetland pony derby with girls riding them. They train them after school, but still- not all ponies liked the hurdles and rather went around them than over them.


Im 'Stadium' lief das Shetland-Pony-Hürden-Rennen mit lauter Mädchen und ihren Pferdchen, die sie nach der Schule trainieren.  Nicht alle Ponies mochten die Hürden, also sind sie einfach daran vorbeigallopiert statt drüber zu springen.

There were two lumberjacks climbing up 30m tree trunks...

 Holzfäller kletterten um die Wette Baumstämme hoch...

...and then climbing down again. (Must be a canadian thing!) They then went on to walk on a floating log, trying to force the other into the cold water. 

...um dann wieder runterzuklettern (scheint so ein kanadischer Brauch zu sein). Dann zeigten sie noch ein Erholungsspiel, das die Holzfäller zum Feierabend spielen: Auf einem Stamm balancieren und 
den anderen ins Wasser zu befördern ohne zu schubsen.

At the close, the local piped band marched in leading the grand parade of all the competitors

Am Ende spielte die lokale Dudelsack-Combo (Erbe der schott. Einwanderer) und führte die große Parade aller Teilnehmer an
