Banks Peninsula-------Banks Halbinsel

 Hello all you lovely people out there, in warm and not so warm places, just to let you know we are still enjoying ourselves. Tina, we celebrated your !!!th birthday in style.








We drove down to Akaroa, (around Christchuch), on the Banks Peninsula. It is a very beautiful area with some spectacular bays and some unusual rock formations.  It started off as a very large vulcano and the lava flows streamed out forming the shape of a cog wheel. Over the centuries, erosion has whittled down the rough edges and the beautiful bays were evolved.
At Akaroa, the English navy beat the French by three days and claimed the area for the crown. The French settlers agreed to stay, albeit under English rule. The town was shared, one half French, the other English. This is still obvious today with the street names indicating which area you are in.

Wir sind auf die Banks-Halbinsel nach Akaroa gefahren. Die Halbinsel war mal ein Megavulkan- jetzt erloschen, obwohl die Geologen hier sagen, so was wie erloschene Vulkane gibt es gar nicht. Jetzt sieht die Halbinsel aus wie ein Zahnrad, die Einbuchtungen sind Meeresbuchten, eine schöner als die andere. Hier haben sich einige französische Siedler niedergelassen, denen nur knapp die Briten zuvorkamen, indem sie die Halbinsel als Teil Neuseelands zur britischen Kolonie machten.In der Stadt sind etliche französische Einflüsse, die Einwohner sagen aber, das wird für die Touristen gepuscht.

Angela booked a trip with the mail van which delivers mail to the outlying houses. The postman Robin was a former conservation ranger and was very knowledgeable of the area. He drives about 150 kms each day over some rough and windy roads. He showed the two tourists around, served them breakfast at the beach and emptied an Victorian letter box!!!Here are her fotos:

Ich habe eine Postboten-Begleit-Tour gemacht. Der Postbote Robin ist ein ehemaliger Ranger, der fast sein ganzes Leben hier verbracht hat . Jeden Tag fährt er 150 km zu all den Buchten und entlegenen Häusern und Farmen.Er hat uns 2 Touris viel erklärt, uns Frühstück am Strand serveirt und dann einen victorianische Briefkasten geleert. (Victoria regina=VR) :

I declined the offer to accompany them. I spent a quiet morning reading the daily paper at breakfast and walking through the town. I also did our laundry, to fill the time. This peace changed as soon as Angela was delivered in good health back to me. `We are off to Le Bons Bay´ she cried. My first question of the postie was, "How are the roads?" Not bad he says, with a slight twinkle in his eye. So off we go. I think I wore out 2nd gear on the trip but the views were fantastic and I must admit, I enjoyed myself..

Terry wollte nicht mitfahren-selber schuld. Er hat dann in Ruhe in einem Cafe bei englischen Frühstück die Zeitung gelesen und sich das Städtchen angesehen. UNd um die Zeit rumzukriegen- auch die Wäsche gemacht ;)God bless his little cotton socks!
Die Ruhe tat ihm gut, denn es gab keine Bedenken, als ich ihm vorschlug (befahl??!!;), dass wir so!!!fort!!! zur Le-Bons-Bay fahren. Robin sagte, die Straßen sind okay, grins-grins-alle zweispurig, dann ist ja Platz für Gegenverkehr. Wir fuhren ständig im 2. Gang, dafür hatten wir grandiose Aussichten und haben dort einen schönen Nachmittag und Abend verbracht.
