800 cubic kilometres of pumice and ash--800 Kubik-km Asche und Gestein

Von Rotorua geht es weiter zum Taupo-See. Doch auf der Fahrt entdecke ich einen dampfenden See und bunte Felsen-the Rainbow mountain, das möchte ich mir näher ansehen. Terry macht eine Kehrtwende, wir gehen zum See und in der Nähe des Sees entdecken wir dann an einem kleinen Parkplatz einen Thermal-Fluss mit Naturplanschbecken und hüpfen hinein.
So muss das gewesen sein, als die Kelten sich in den heißen Quellen Aachens geräkelt haben.

From Rotorua we drive towards lake Taupo and I see a steaming lake and colourful rocks on a hill- the rainbow mountain, I's like to have a closer look. Terry does a u-turn, we look at the lake and then discover near a car park  a thermal river with natural pools and hop in.
It must have been like this when the Celtic people lounged in the hot springs in Aachen.

In Taupo spazieren wir am Seeufer, mit 616 qkm Oberfläche NSLs größter See.
Es ist nicht nur ein See, es ist ein Kratersee entstanden vor ca. 26.500 Jahren
bei einem Mega-Ausbruch, der innerhalb weniger Tage ca. 800 Kubik-Kilometer Bimsgestein und Asche freisetzte und fast die ganze Nordinsel, Teile der Südinsel und Inseln bis 1000 km Entfernung mit einer ca. 200 m hohen Schicht bedeckte. Das ist ja logisch, wenn 800 Kubikmeter Masse futsch sind, entsteht ein Loch und daraus ein See.

 In Taupo we walk along the lakefront - with 616 square km of surface it is  NZ's largest lake.It is not only a lkae, but a crater lake, formed app. 26.500 yrs. ago when a mega-eruption covered within a few days most of the North Island, parts of the South Island and islands up to 100km away with a layer of ash and pumice about 200m high. Well, it's a sure thing, when 800 cubic kilometres of mass are gone, there is a hole left- hence the lake.

Vor ca. 1800 Jahren gab es noch einmal einen Riesenausbruch, allerdings nur 120 Kubikkilometer Auswurf in ein paar Minuten und bis zu 50km hoch mit Feuerregen und Feuersturm.  Die Asche färbte den Himmel rot über Rom und China, wie Zeitzeugen berichten. Hier ein geklautes Schaubild der kleineren Eruption.
 App. 1800 yrs ago there was another mega eruption, but only 120 cubic kilometres of emissions in a few minutes and up to 50km high with a fire storm and rain of fire.The ash turned the sky red over Rome and China.

 

Taupo ist der aktivste Vulkan, vielleicht explodiert er morgen, vielleicht in 1000 Jahren.Hoffentlich erst, wenn wir wieder zu Hause sind.

Taupo is the most active vulcano. It might go off tomorrow or in 1000 years.Hopefully not until we are back home.





















Wir gucken uns dann noch Waiotapu an, das nennt sich thermisches Wunderland mit Becken, Seen, Kratern, Dampflöchern, und Mineralterrassen. Der Name ist echt nicht übertrieben.
We look at Waiotapu, which calls itself thermal wonderland with pools, lakes, craters, steam vents and mineral terraces. The name is not exaggerated.

Ich hab die letzten 3 Fotos aus dem Netz- als wir da waren, hat es geregnet wie der Teufel und auch so gestunken. Unsere Fotos sind nicht so gut wegen des kalten Regens gab es zuviel Dampf.

In der Stadt Taupo trafen wir noch den Weihnachtsmann mit dem traditionellen NSL Schuhwerk: Gummistiefeln.

In Taupo town we met Father Christmas with his NZ footwear: gum boots.

Gegen seinen Kumpel wirkte er overdressed. Aber der Kumpel war entspannter und angelte, ihn störte sogar die Vogelkacke im Mundwinkel nicht.

Compared to his mate he seemed overdressed. But his mate was very relaxed and fishing, even the bird shit in the corner of his mouth bothered him.
