In Invercargil buchen wir unseren Trip nach Stewart Island und besuchen das direkt daneben liegende Southland Museum. Die Stars des Museums sind die Tuatara, eine Reptilienart, die überall auf der Welt verbreitet waren. Als vor 65 Millionen Jahren die Dinos ausstarben, haben diese Viecher nur in NSL überlebt.
Durch Klimawandel und die Auswirkungen bzw. Doofheit der Menschheit gibt es nur noch 1% der ursprünglichen Anzahl in NSL. Sie leben geschützt auf raubtierfreien Inseln vor dem Festland und in diesem Museum. Henry, der schüchterne Tuatara unter dem Baumstamm-irgendwann im 19. Jahrhundert geboren, bandelte mit der 80jährigen Mildred an und wurde im stolzen Alter von fast 200 Jahren Papa!!
In Invercargill we book our trip to Stewart Island und visit the adjacent Southland Museum. The stars of the museum are the Tuatara, a branch of the reptile family. They once lived all over the world. When the dinosaurs died 65 million years ago, these creatures survived only in NZ.Now due to climate change and mankind's impact and stupidity 1% of the former Tuatara of NZ survive- sheltered now on predator free islands or in the museum. Henry, the shy Tuatara under the log- orn sometime in the 19th century, hooked up with 80 year old Mildred and became a daddy!!
Was??!! Heute waren wir noch nicht am Strand!!! Auf der Nordinsel bekamen wir einen Tipp: Gemstone (=Halbedelstein) beach. Mit der coolsten Strandhütte.
What??!! Today we haven't been to a beach!!! On the North Island s.b. told us about gemstone beach which has the coolest beach hut.

Auf einem Hinweisschild am Strand steht, welche Halbedelsteine hier so am Strand rumliegen, ein Ehepaar erklärt uns,worauf wir achten müssen und woran wir die verschiedenen Halbedelsteine erkennen können. Ja, und dass hier mal ein Klumpen Gold gefunden wurde. Wir behalten sehr wenig davon und sammeln einfach alles, was schön aussieht. Und das mit dem Gold vergisst mein Mann nicht, er gibt nicht auf bis die Flut kommt, er will auch einen Goldklumpen finden!!!
On a sign at the beach we get informed which genstones are laying about on the beach and a couple explains, what we have to look for and how we can distinguish real gemstones. Yes, and s.b. found a big nugget of gold once.
We can't remember all the stones' names and looks and collect what looks beautiful.But my husband doesn't forget about the gold, he keeps looking for gold until the tide comes in.
