Otago Rail Trail- Radtour

Von Alexandra aus lassen wir uns und unsere Leihräder nach Auripo fahren- immer schön bergauf geht die Fahrt. Unser Ziel: 48 km zurück nach Alexandra auf DEM Radwanderweg NSLs, dem Otago Rail Trail, immer schön bergab zu fahren.
In Alexandra we rent bikes and get transport to Auripo---driving uphill all the time. Our aim: 48 km  back to Alexandra on THE bike trail of NZ, the Otago rail trail, going downhill all the time.

Wir fahren die alte Bahnstrecke entlang durch offene, grüne Landschaft, im Hintergrund die Bergkette, überall Felsformationen.
We follow the old rail track through open green country, with the mountain range at the back, and rocky schist formations everywhere.

Jemand hat uns erzählt, so grün war es seit 20 Jahren hier nicht, denn Otago ist sowohl NSLs heißeste, kälteste und trockenste Gegend. Nur in diesem Jahr gab es genug Regen. Das haben wir auch gemerkt.Wir radeln über Viadukte,

ohne Terry's Taschenlampen zu benutzen durch 2 rabenschwarze Tunnel (je 200m lang). Ich fahre laut kreischend vor und merke, dass Tunnel am besten ohne Sonnenbrille und mit Taschenlampe durchfahren werden.

Eine kurze Pause in Lauder. Dann geht es weiter- alles wunderbar und alles duftet nach Holunder und Thymian.

A short rest in Lauder. We carry on- everything is great and the air is scented with elderflower and thyme.

Aber was ist das? Eine lange Steigung?! Das war nicht abgemacht! Und dann sieht das hier noch so aus wie zu Hause!
But- what's this?  Going uphill?! That wasn't part of the agreement! And it looks just like home!

Zeit für Kaffee in altem Pub. Direkt daneben NSLs kleinste historische Poststation

Time for coffee in an old pub. Next to it is the smallest historical post office

Die allererste Poststation hier war das links hängende Zelt mit einer Bedienungsluke.
The very first post station was the tent -still hung up on the left with a little window to service people.


und wir konnten auch das  Plumpsklo des Postbeamten bewundern.
and we could admire the postie's toilet.

Es wird kühler. Eine Henne wärmt ihre Küken und die Schafe suchen Schutz unter einem Baum.
It is getting colder. A hen is warming her chicks and the sheep are seeking shelter under a tree.

Wolken ziehen auf, wir die Regenjacken an und flitzen an einem ehem. Bahnhof vorbei.

Clouds are forming, we put on our rain jackets and race past an old train station.

Wir kommen an einem ehemaligen 'Ladies waiting room' eines ehem. Bahnsteigs vorbei

und nun beginnt mein Mann zu fluchen,denn wir haben fiesen Gegenwind: Shit!Dann fällt ihm noch bei einem Fotostop das Rad um und das Lenkrad in die Waden: Hell! Und zu guter Letzt regnet es: Bloody shitty hell!

and my husband starts swearing because the nasty wind is against us: Shit! Then- stopping to take a foto- his bike falls over and into his calves: Hell! And to top it all  it starts raining: Bloody shitty hell!

und den Fluss auf gleicher Höhe haben, sind wir wieder in Alexandra. Geschafft! Wir geben die Räder zurück und mein Mann meint: "Sweetheart! Du gehst doch bestimmt lieber ohne mich einkaufen, oder? And don't forget the beer!" und kollabiert auf der Liege im Wohnmobil.

and are level with the river, we are back in Alexandra. Made it! We hand the bikes back and my husband asks: "Sweetheart! I'm sure you would prefer shopping without me, wouldn't you? And don't forget the beer!"  and collapses on the bench in the campervan.
